Return On Leisure

Be careful of the “leisure lie.” A retirement filled with leisure activities isn’t all fun and games. The kid in a candy store effect wears off quickly, as even children eventually get sick of eating just candy. Have you ever noticed how much candy is left over after Halloween?

Retirement is the same way – the law of diminishing returns applies to leisure. Going from all work, no play, to all play, no work is a recipe for discontent. During your working years, strive to find a balance between vacation and vocation. Take the extra trip or vacation sooner rather than later.

For those of you that are stuck in a rut, it can help to model your retirement after people you know that are having rich and fulfilling retirements. Apply their successful qualities to your retirement. Venture outside of your comfort zone; explore hobbies or volunteer opportunities that will keep you engaged.
